Volunteers all over the world are helping to create the conditions which will make peace possible. They are working to end poverty, to combat disease, to defeat illiteracy, and to protect our environment. They are working to reduce inequalities and to restore and defend human rights and political justice. In accepting the honour of ringing this great bell for peace and love, I do so on behalf of volunteers everywhere. My wish is that governments, the corporate sector and civil society will together support the world’s volunteers in their pursuit of peace.
