Distinguished Guests, Dear Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen, good day.
Inspired by the Document On Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, signed in 2019 by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayeb, the United Nations proclaimed February 4 as the International Day of Human Fraternity. This observance focuses on advancing the well-being of all humanity and on awakening a shared commitment to work together in building a culture of peace. The selfless vision and moral courage demonstrated by these two religious leaders embody inclusiveness and solidarity that transcend borders and differences. They reminded us that, despite our diverse cultures, beliefs, and identities, we all belong to one human family. Cultural and religious tolerance, sincere dialogue, and mutual respect are the cornerstones of building a peaceful world.
For decades, I have promoted a culture of conscience and peace. Conscience is our innate moral compass—the gentle yet steadfast voice that guides us toward mutual understanding, empathy, and justice. This inner guide speaks to a truth cherished within each of us: racial and cultural diversity is a gift. Respect and inclusivity that transcend differences of ethnicity, language, and nationality are essential to advancing the development of all humanity, creating opportunities for mutual support, unity, and shared prosperity, and enabling people and nations alike to enjoy enduring friendship, harmony, and long-term stability.
The spirit of the International Day of Human Fraternity resonates closely with that of the International Day of Conscience and the International Day for Tolerance. Benevolence and compassion reflect the radiance of humanity’s innate goodness—the capacity to feel another’s hunger as one’s own, and another’s suffering as one’s own. Tolerance represents respect for and appreciation of the rich diversity of cultures, beliefs, and forms of expression. Conscience is the foundation of tolerance, and tolerance is the practice of conscience. With conscience as our foundation, let us act with hope through kindness and compassion, foster tolerance through love, and build a world of shared prosperity and friendship.
Today, let us listen to the call of conscience and reaffirm our shared responsibility. I would like to offer three considerations.
- Let us embrace diversity with curiosity rather than suspicion. Cultural and religious differences are like mirrors through which we may discover new dimensions of our shared humanity. When we approach one another with open hearts and inclusiveness, we gain an accumulation of wisdom.
- Let us commit ourselves to sincere dialogue. Dialogue is not a debate to be won, but a bridge to be built—one founded on humility, attentive listening, tolerance, understanding, and the courage to allow conscience to guide our pursuit of justice.
- Let us make mutual respect, inclusiveness, and understanding our daily moral compass. To respect others is to honor each person’s unique life journey; to be inclusive is to embrace, with compassion, the unique worth of all beings; and to seek understanding is to engage in wise dialogue across diverse cultures and ways of thinking. Through respect, inclusivity, and understanding, we honor and care for one another. By recognizing differences and seeking cooperation, we cultivate relationships grounded in equality and harmony. In doing so, we enable peaceful coexistence and shared prosperity among individuals and nations alike.
Transparency and integrity are vital to promoting peace and sustainable development. Transparency serves as the cornerstone of trust and cooperation, while integrity is the foundation for sustained collaboration and mutual support, embodying sincerity, uprightness, and responsibility. We encourage governments and organizations worldwide to act with transparency and integrity in order to foster trust, social stability, and harmony.
The International Day of Human Fraternity marks a beginning for action. It calls upon each of us to become ambassadors of peace—within our families, workplaces, communities, and nations—by placing love and conscience at the heart of our values. In doing so, we can help ensure that every person, regardless of culture, belief, nationality, or background, is able to live with dignity and freedom, to develop their talents and realize their potential, and to move forward with hope toward a bright sustainable future.
The world we seek—one grounded in tolerance, dialogue, and mutual respect—already resides within the heart of each of us, awaiting our collective action through love and conscience. This is the right choice we make when we listen to the call of conscience. Let us choose unity over indifference, empathy over misunderstanding, and conscience over self-interest. May our shared efforts continue to illuminate the path of human fraternity, benefiting generations to come, as we move forward together toward a future of human fraternity and peace.
Thank you all!
